October 2010 Update: Monthly Soccer Meet-Up

IMIJ invites all soccer loving families in Jeddah to join us for our monthly soccer event. We'll be getting together for soccer play and practice for both boys and girls. So far, we’ve got together on a monthly basis at a local park in Jeddah but have recently been afforded the opportunity to host our monthly event at a local professional sports park.

To take advantage of this wonderful offer, which is currently free of cost, we’d like to make sure we have a sufficient number of attendees.

The park consists of volleyball and basketball courts, and soccer playing fields. Unlike most sport parks here which do not permit female entrance, we’ve been granted special permission to allow mums to enter the sports park.

Details: Volunteer based (Dads and Mums) Local and expats welcome.
Ages: All

Future plan: To form a soccer league and join local competition

Soccer Meet

Each month, the IMIJ group aims to arrange an informal "Soccer Meet" at one of Jeddah's smaller public parks. The park is set in a quiet, residential area and consists of two large, grassy areas suitable for playing soccer, badminton, holding children's races and a number of family fun activities.

Younger children enjoy playing on the swings and slides.

Older boys kick the ball around ... and even older boys relax on a picnic rug and socialise! So to do the ladies.

The mosque is directly opposite the park and the reasonably clean facilities there can also be used.

A fun-filled afternoon is had by all, which ends with a quick litter pick of the park.

All families are welcome! Visit the Facebook page or email us at imijeddah1@gmail.com for details of the next Soccer Meet.

Darat Safeya Binzagr

All photos courtesy of Abdulhameed Shamandour

On a bright and sunny Thursday morning, approximately 30 to 40 of us (including children) gathered at the beautiful art gallery of Safeya Binzagr.

The artist herself left one of her ongoing projects and came down to show us her collection. She explained how she set out to relay the history of Saudi Arabia in general, and the Hijaz in particular, not with pen and paper, but with her brush and paint (and in fact many other art tools). Individual paintings show scenes of daily life in the region such as children playing with marbles or women meeting for tea.

But certain halls have series' of paintings outlining wedding preparations from start to finish, for example. One hall is dedicated to the various wedding costumes of Arabia and in another, the actual costumes are displayed.

The artist has showcased her life's work in acrylics, watercolours, oils, pastels, inks and more of the culture, history, architecture and daily life of this region. She discussed and answered questions about her work and the background of certain pieces. What a joy to attain this kind of information from the talented artist herself. Ma sha Allah!

The gallery is open to all on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 8:30 pm. It also houses a small gift shop where prints, books and note cards can be purchased. You may read a brief biography of the artist here and have a look at the gallery too.
